DYLAN AT MINER is a border-crossing Métis with roots in the historic aboriginal communities of Slave Lake, Alberta; Red River, Manitoba; Drummond Island, Michigan; and Penetanguishene, Ontario. In 2010, he was awarded an Artist Leadership Grant from the National Museum of the American Indian (Smithsonian). This year he will hang solo exhibitions at Urban Shaman Gallery in Canada, University of Notre Dame, Alma College, Michigan Institute for Contemporary Art, and Fort Lewis College, a university that once served as an Indian boarding school. Next year, he will travel to Norway to exhibit and work with the Sami people, as well as exhibit in Chicago.

Prof. Miner holds a PhD in the history of art from The University of New Mexico, USA. He has published extensively and lectured globally on contemporary Native art and Indigenous sovereignty, including two forthcoming books from University of Arizona Pressand IB Tauris. To date, he has published more than forty journal articles, book chapters, review essays, and encyclopedia entries. As a professor, he has lead Indigenous-centered courses in the Great Lakes, US Southwest, California, and Mexico. Currently, Prof. Miner coordinates the Michigan Native Arts Initiative, is a professor in the Residential College in the Arts and Humanities at Michigan State University, and a curator at the MSU Museum. He divides his times between Anishinaabewaki and Aztlán. He lives with his wife and two daughters.

Shirley Brauker is an amazing woman with many talents. She is a member of the Little River Band of Ottawa Indians and has always been an artist. Starting with drawings and paintings she then moved on to clay and bronze work.

Last week, Shirley taught our youth how to tell their stories through pottery by taking some of their story symbols and carving them into their pieces.

Shirley is well known throughout the state of Michigan and the United States. She has done work for museums, been published in multiple books, and has even worked for the Kellogg Foundation. She combines stories and legends to form a work of art that will pass on a rich culture to generations to come.

The Ziibiwing Center truly enjoyed her visit and we look forward to her presentation tomorrow.

Chicken-Wild Rice-Casserole 

Ingredients: 

2 (10 1/2-ounce) cans low-sodium chicken broth (nabob) 

1 (6.2-ounce) package fast-cooking long-grain and wild rice mix (manoomin naboob) 

1 (8-ounce) package fresh mushroom slices 

3 cups chopped cooked chicken (pakaakwens) 

2/3 cup Italian dressing 

1 (8-ounce) container sour cream 

Preparation: Cook rice in a large saucepan according to package directions, using 2 cans chicken broth instead of water. Add mushrooms before the last 5 minutes. 

Stir in chicken, dressing, and sour cream; spoon into a lightly greased 2-quart baking dish. 

Bake at 325° for 30 minutes or until thoroughly heated. Let stand 10 minutes.

Katrina Mitten will lead the workshop and provide instruction on traditional and contemporary beading techniques. The 5-day Adult Beadwork Workshop is $35 per participant. Space is limited. All participants must register in advance and be 18 years or older.

Katrina Mitten is a member of the Miami Tribe of Oklahoma. She has worked for over thirty years in bead embroidery traditions while transforming her creations into contemporary wearable art. Through the use of semi-precious stones and the inspiration from their form and colors she creates one-of-a-kind necklaces, bracelets, and earrings. She also beads traditional pieces including bags, cradleboards, and jackets. It has been said that if something is lying around long enough she will bead it.

The Artist-in-Residence Mentoring Program was created in 2007 to provide Woodland Indian Art education, technique, tools, and cultural instruction to the next generation. There are four workshops scheduled for 2011 including Fiber Arts, Classic Animation Cel Painting, Beadwork, and Pottery. The programs include activities for classroom groups at theZiibiwingCenterfrom 9am – 1:30pm and adult workshops in the evenings from 5:30pm – 8pm.
