The Ziibiwing Center of Anishinabe Culture & Lifeways is pleased to announce it will be presenting the 3rd Artist-in-Residence Mentoring Program. The upcoming November workshop will focus on Beadwork with Katrina Mitten!

Workshop Dates: Monday, November 14 – Friday, November 18, 2011

Workshop Times: 5:30pm – 8pm held at theZiibiwingCenter

Katrina Mitten will lead the workshop and provide instruction on traditional and contemporary beading techniques. The 5-day Adult Beadwork Workshop is $35 per participant. Space is limited. All participants must register in advance and be 18 years or older.

Katrina Mitten is a member of the Miami Tribe of Oklahoma. She has worked for over thirty years in bead embroidery traditions while transforming her creations into contemporary wearable art. Through the use of semi-precious stones and the inspiration from their form and colors she creates one-of-a-kind necklaces, bracelets, and earrings. She also beads traditional pieces including bags, cradleboards, and jackets. It has been said that if something is lying around long enough she will bead it.

The Artist-in-Residence Mentoring Program was created in 2007 to provide Woodland Indian Art education, technique, tools, and cultural instruction to the next generation. There are four workshops scheduled for 2011 including Fiber Arts, Classic Animation Cel Painting, Beadwork, and Pottery. The programs include activities for classroom groups at theZiibiwingCenterfrom 9am – 1:30pm and adult workshops in the evenings from 5:30pm – 8pm. Both student and adult programs must be booked in advance.

Honoring the Spirit of the Eagle

Show how much your feathers mean to you during this three day event. Share your pride with other members of the community by cleansing and honoring the eagle feathers of the Ziibiwing collection along with your own eagle feathers (or other bird feathers).

October 19 • 1-6pm

Eagle Feather Cleansing

Join members of the Anishinabe Ogitchedaw Veterans & Warriors Society, Eagle Clan, and the Ziibiwing staff in the cleansing of the eagle feathers. Please feel free to bring your own eagle feathers (or other bird feathers) on this day to cleanse.

October 20 & 21 • 1-6pm

Eagle Feather Honoring

For the second and third day of this event, honor and visit the eagle feathers of the Ziibiwing Collection. A semaa (tobacco bowl) will be available for you to leave your offering. These offerings will then be placed in a sacred fire on the final day.

October 21 • 6-8pm

Eagle Feather Feast

A feast will take place on this day with the eagle feathers of the Ziibiwing Collection as well as with your own eagle or bird feathers. A sacred fire will then be lit to place your semaa (tobacco) offerings. Please bring a dish to pass-no poultry or other bird dishes.
