Community Cultural Teaching & Pottery Presentation

16 Dec

Saturday, December 17 • 1-5pm
1pm • Welcome and feast
1:30-3pm • Artist Shirley Brauker, will discuss pottery
3-5pm • Wild Ricing Presentation

Shirley Brauker is an amazing woman with many talents. She is a member of the Little River Band of Ottawa Indians and has always been an artist. Starting with drawings and paintings she then moved on to clay and bronze work.

Last week, Shirley taught our youth how to tell their stories through pottery by taking some of their story symbols and carving them into their pieces.

Shirley is well known throughout the state of Michigan and the United States. She has done work for museums, been published in multiple books, and has even worked for the Kellogg Foundation. She combines stories and legends to form a work of art that will pass on a rich culture to generations to come.

The Ziibiwing Center truly enjoyed her visit and we look forward to her presentation tomorrow.

Seven Grandfather Teachings

1 Dec

A few posts back we learned about one of the seven grandfather teachings. This week we are going to learn another. Below is a portion of the picture that belongs with the next teaching, read the passage below to guess which one it is.

“Another grandfather offered ________ to teach the boy to know that he was equal to everyone else, no better or no less.”

Here are the seven grandfather teachings you can choose from; Love (Zaagidwin), Bravery (Aakodewin), Honesty (Gwekowaadiziwin), Wisdom (Nibwaakaawin), Humility (Dibaadendizowin), Truth (Debwewin), and Respect (Manaadjitowaawin).

(Remember, you’ve already used one of these before!)
